Professional Dancer Preston Mui

Preston Mui is a professional dancer who hails from San Francisco and trekked his way to Hollywood with a bag full of dreams. He’s shuffled and shimmied across the stage with some of the most adored entertainers such as Britney Spears, Lady Gaga, Nicki Minaj, Jennifer Lopez, Janet Jackson, Mariah Carey, The Pussycat Dolls, Black Eyed Peas, John Legend, Jason Mraz, and Christina Aguilera. He was head choreographer for Masked Singer. He was also in Fanny Pack on America’s Best Dance Crew (ABDC). He is currently in the Broadway cast of Hamilton, an American Musical. Preston is so busy but still takes time to teach kids. His resume is packed with talent, experience, and FUN. Yet, he is giving us some of his time and energy today.

Hi, Preston! You’ve done so much already. You could retire as a dancer. What keeps you going?
AAAHH!!! I SHOULD RETIRE. I’m sore all the time, and my feet are constantly hurting. BUT…. dance is all I know. When I’m feeling down, dance always propels me forward. It’s the feeling you get when you’re dancing. It’s unlike anything I’ve ever felt. It’s cathartic and meditative when you’re moving to music and sounds; creating unique shapes with the body; and giving your entire heart to a performance.

What is your favorite aspect of dancing?
My favorite aspect of dance is how all encompassing it is. It requires you to have laser focus, body awareness, strength & endurance, artistry, musicality and emotional freedom & depth. Just to name a few… :)

When did you know you had it? When did you know that dancing was more than just fun and one of significant purpose?
I knew I had a gift when I was fairly young. It wasn’t until high school that it clicked for me. I was training every day and found myself getting attention from local choreographers and teachers. When I was 16, I decided that performing was going to be my life. And when I graduated high school, I moved to Los Angeles and my mind blew wide open. The entertainment industry introduced itself to me and I never looked back.

What is one of your dreams?
One of my dreams is to create work that gives opportunities to people of color. It has become my life's work to bring more diversity and equity to the entertainment industry.

Preston Mui Story

You’re always moving and shaking. How do you wind down and re-energize?
SLEEP! My favorite thing to do is my nightly face regimen, get cozy in bed, and fall asleep to meditation music. I’m officially a grandma.

What’s your skin care process?
I have my daytime regimen and my nighttime regimen. Different products for each part of the day. However, Rescue Skin is twice-a-day kinda gal. We love her. OH and I make sure to use SPF EVERY DANG DAY.

Are there any particular skin care habits that you’d like to share?
One thing I’ve noticed is DIET. The food you eat really affects your skin. I ignored it for so long, but once I started to eat more cleanly, my skin was brighter and healthier looking.

What has been the biggest challenge in your life?
The biggest challenge in my life has been learning to accept rejection. It’s such a huge part of my industry. I’ve been cut from so many auditions, I’ve lost count! But for every 100 no’s, you get an amazing yes that can change your life.

Have you ever run into issues with being gay?
I’ve been called names and disrespected before. People think that using the word “faggot” is demeaning, which it can be. But those same people forget that gay men are educated, brave and strong. We can fight back with our fists, but we can cut deeper with our words.

Are you single?
Absolutely

If so, what are you looking for in a man?
I’m looking for HIGH QUALITY. Not in material things, but in emotion, empathy, generosity, kindness and emotional connection. Having good style and a cute face doesn’t hurt either.

If you’re in a relationship, what’s the most special trait you find in each other?
NOT APPLICABLLLEEEEEEE

Thank you for taking time out to talk with Rxescue. We’re looking forward to seeing you rock more stages, TV, and more!
