Q&A with Ila

Would you please take a moment to explain what Pilates entails? Sometimes, I still get confused with yoga.

Pilates is a mind body discipline, just like yoga. I can see how many people can confuse the two, however Pilates adds another element which is strength training. Pilates is effective and intentional total body movement with an emphasis on core strength. It teaches body awareness, good posture and builds strength without excess bulk. It improves flexibility, agility and it can help alleviate back pain. A very famous quote by Joseph Pilates states “ You are only as young as your spine is flexible.” Our society today relies heavily on technology which really takes a toll on our spinal health and posture, we are always sitting in front of a computer or phone. What Pilates can do for the body is return it back to life, one healthy spine at a time. Back pain is so common which for some can be life altering. Pilates builds your core strength and while doing so can stabilize and strengthen your back.

When did you begin doing Pilates? How did you discover it?

I started taking Pilates classes back in 2012. I sustained some injuries while running track and my back pain at that time was so bad I couldn’t even bend over to tie my shoe. Sitting down all day at work wreaked havoc on my back as well. I actually had to stop going to the gym for a year because it was so bad. A friend of mine suggested Pilates and after my first class I was sold. My body changed in ways I never thought was possible. Not only was my back stronger but lifting weights became so much easier now that I knew how to engage my body properly.

How has Pilates changed your body and mind?

Pilates has legit changed my life. I am naturally very very shy but it has allowed me to find confidence in my voice. Although I played sports and was used to being in front of hundreds, if not thousands of people, I was never big on speaking in front people, at all. I have become a way better communicator because of the work that I do. The intentionality in my practice has allowed me to use that same intention in every area of my life.

I am beyond grateful that I found Pilates. Being in my late 30’s Pilates compliments my very active lifestyle. It has allowed me to live the kind of life that I hope to have for another 50+ years. Before Pilates I felt like my body was always so stiff and sore after a workout or that I would have to skip a day or two before working out again. I have never had this much core strength, flexibility and overall discipline before.
